APEC Tourism Occupational Standards Development Project
In 2017, SkillsIQ completed a project on behalf of APEC developing occupational standards for a range of job roles in the tourism and hospitality industry utilising the APEC Occupational Standards Framework.
A working group that brought together representatives from Australia, The Philippines, Peru, Vietnam, Thailand and Chinese Taipei was established in October 2016 and met for an initial workshop in Brisbane in November 2016.
At this workshop six job roles were selected by the group as being roles that had prospects for international labour mobility. It was agreed that occupational standards would be developed for these roles:
- Bar Attendant
- Cook
- Event Coordinator
- Front Desk Attendant
- Housekeeper
- Travel Consultant
Feedback from the working group and their in-country validation activities informed the development of job profiles and occupational standards for each of these roles and these were confirmed by the working group members at a recent workshop in Vietnam in May 2017. These occupational standards will now progress to the APEC Human Services Capability Committee for adoption by APEC economies.
